How to find Free Wordpress Themes

Posted by admin

weaponry3.jpgMy weekly Weaponry articles usually have tools and other resources for my readers, but today I am going to be giving you guys some links and tricks to easily find some good quality, free Wordpress themes.

When you type in Free Wordpress themes or skins into Google you get way too many sites that either charge for all their themes or are just garbage as far as designs.  I have a couple of sites and tricks that I use to find good quality themes at a great price…..FREE!

Before I give you these links and tricks that I use, I want to remind you that you should test out the themes prior to actually making them part of your production site.  What you will find with some of the free themes is that sometime the text will be hard to read, or sometimes the tabs don’t react well.  The tab SocialSites does not have a space between the words.  When I put a space between the words it causes the tabs to be displayed in two rows which look horrible.   This happens only in Internet explorer 6.0 and below.

This brings me to my next point, make sure that you test the new themes in both Firefox and Internet explorer at a minimum.  You can and will find a lot of differences when testing these themes.  Once you find one that will play well with both browsers, then you have a good one and you can start thinking about making it part of your production site.

The last point I want to bring up is, you must test the different themes along with the plugins you use.  You may find that some of the themes don’t play well with some of your most favorite plugins.  If this happens, you can either contact the maker of the plugin or weigh the pros and cons of the theme versus the plugins.  With my current theme, I lost a few plugins, but realized that the look and feel of my site was more important than the plugins.

Before giving out the links there are a couple of tricks I do when I find a theme that I like or cathes my eye.  I will always scroll down to the bottom of the theme and see if there are any recognition ot the author of the theme.  A lot of times the recognition link will take you to a great site with a lot of different free themes.  I hope that you have found this article useful, if you have please subscribe to my RSS feed.  What follows are a couple links with a lot of themes as well as a site that will help you to convert your CSS designs into a Wordpress theme.  If you can’t find a theme with the links provided I suggest that you hire a professional like Arsenal Marketing to help you with your custom blog(s).

Good tips…I utilize a similar technique for template pages for html…I check Google but too many paid ones come up like you said, then I check the author link at the bottom and usually find a goldmine of free templates/themes.

I have a Wordpress install setup just for testing purposes. I use this specifically for testing themes and plugins, making sure it’s not going to break my site.

I’m a big fan of WPDesigner.com. Small Potato has great free themes and lots of resources.
